I never wanted kids...until I met my husband.  From the moment I met him, I knew he was going to be a TERRIFIC dad and that we would start a family together.  I was lucky in the fact that I had an easy time getting pregnant, as well as an easy pregnancy.  I spent my time researching like a typical first-time parent: what cribs are safest, how to prepare for a natural birth, breastfeeding tips, etc.  I thought I was very well prepared for Sidney's arrival...but I was wrong.  For the first months of Sidney's life, I was in a fog.  I cried, I didn't want to get out of bed, I joined every social media group there was and asked for everyone's opinions on what was best for my own daughter...only to be crippled with the overwhelming responses and information.  I didn't feel any emotional connection with my daughter.  I organized and re-organized clothes and toys to feel like I had some sort of control over my life.

My husband, bless him, noticed these symptoms and urged me to get help.  With a combination of therapy and medication, I slowly started to feel like myself again.  Again, I was one of the lucky ones.

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders are the #1 medical complication related to childbearing in the United States yet only 40% are detected and diagnosed and of those, only 60% of women receive treatment.  It's time to end the stigma, educate professionals, and rally together as a community to support new and veteran parents.  It takes a village...let's make ours strong!
